'Daily Baby' is now 'Daily Drawing'

In an attempt to continue drawing and posting every day, I have decided to change the title of the ‘Daily Baby' project to 'Daily Drawing’.

I need to expand the content of what I draw, especially drawing things I usually avoid.
So for the next month or so, I will be drawing dudes and dudes only! :)

Daily Baby sketches..!

I've been so bad at keeping up to date with things on here!! I'm sorry blogger! :( One day I will actually organise myself properly in terms of social media at least..

For the meantime, here are a few sketches I have been doing as a daily drawing project (which you can view in full on my tumblr) Please go there to check the sketches out too.

And yes.. there are some Doctor Who related 'Daily Babies' in there too... as well as one from the musical, "Next to Normal" which I have listened to a billion times this year.. (it's amazing everyone should watch/listen to this. London please bring it to the stage here pleaseohplease???)

 Hope you like! :)

New Daily Sketching Project!

I call it my "Daily Baby" project. I aim to complete a drawing/sketch/doodle every day (for as long as I can) to draw any babies/toddlers/kids I see!

For the past few months I have been working in Islington, London. It's a really nice area, with lots of good shops and cafes; full of babies! I have been able to draw a few from memory, but now I have decided to dedicate a few minutes every day to producing a sketch to upload and share with you all.

I am mainly uploading these sketches on my art tumblr ( jess-oui.tumblr.com ) So please check them out there if you have a tumblr account. Though I will upload a few on here too!

So here are the first 3 entries!

Enjoy.

Primary School May Fair Sketch Day!

Today I went to my younger cousins' Primary school for their annual May Fair. There are lots of stalls and this year I was able to have my own stall where I could sketch some of the attendees!

It was such a great day, although the weather took a turn for the worse (as to be expected in England). So although it started bright sunny and very windy (note the yellow stickers holding everything in place), it ended cold, rainy and windy by the end of the fair.

The kids were so sweet. They were between 4 and 8 years old, and they were just the greatest sitters! Conversation-wise, we covered most things, from favourite animals, favourite school subjects to favourite TV programmes. (Two girls in particular were really knowledgeable and had some really insightful thoughts on Doctor Who! Seriously, they were really intelligent.. I was intimidated...)

So all in all, it was a terrific day. I wasn't able to take any photos of the sketches I completed, as I didn't have enough time! (There was a constant queue of kids so I couldn't really stop to fuss with a camera) But at the end of the fair, my stall was the last one to be disassembled, and unfortunately I missed out on drawing three kids (One of which started to cry, bless her!) Though hopefully I will be able to draw them again at the school's Pre-School Fair which I will be attending in July. I also gave the little girl who was upset one of my business cards which seemed to cheer her up :)

A good few people took my business cards and sounded interested in commissions, which would be fantastic too.

Absolutely knackered by the end of it, but what a great time I had!

Thanks to all the kids who sat for me! You were awesome! :)

Character Practice Portraits for School Fair...!

These are two practice portraits I’m doing as preparation for a local Primary School fair I will have a stall at in a few weeks time. They were designed and painted by me.

I want to do some simple character portraits in gouache paint on site as well as the possibility of completing them once the fair is over if demand is high. I’m trying to complete them in about 40 minutes each.

20% of the money for these particular portraits will be given to the school to help raise money for their own purposes.

I hope to be able to complete a few whilst I’m there. I’m looking forward to it!

Cooking-related illustrations for a friend!

My friend asked me to do some illustrations for her university course’s final year ideas to raise money for their final show. She is on a costume design course in London and my friend and her coursemates are putting together their own recipe book so these illustrations will be for the final book.

I was happy to do it, as I enjoy drawing the costumes from the related eras shown here.

The first image shows the rough ideas I sketched out with the reference material given. Then after my friend had chosen the ones she liked (with her coursemates’ feedback too) I cleaned up the drawings and did some very basic colouring.

I really enjoyed drawing the last two (the flapper girl and the 1950s woman) as I absolutely adore the two eras. They were SO fun to draw. I really want to do more, especially 50s style.
I was pushed for time to get these done by the end, so the oven in the 1950s one is traced (I know, the shame!) from this image here: http://www.memorystore.org.uk/_images/gadgetsPics/largepopup/cooker1950s.jpg THANKS GOOGLE IMAGES *WINK*

Once the book is printed I will be sent a copy, so cannot wait to see it! I’ll have to take a photo and upload it here.

I really hope they raise the money. I know from my university course experience last year how challenging it is for the whole year to club together to raise enough money to put on a good show! Go guys!

Cinderella Doodle..

A little doodle done on Photoshop yesterday evening..

Inspired by this incredible Mary Blair book I bought earlier this week! It is ridiculously beautiful.

I seriously want to paint my walls with Mary Blair scenes and characters.

I loved drawing the sparkles! So fun!

24-hour Comic Challenge!

So I decided to do the 24-hour comic challenge! Unfortunately I didn't post it (on my tumblr -> jess-oui.tumblr.com) in time! I posted it 30 minutes past midnight, BUT! It's still the 1st of February in other parts of the world so that still counts right? :)

I'm aware how small this image may be... I'm hoping if you click to 'view image' it may appear bigger. If not, I shall try re-sizing it.

So this was my day! In comic-form! This was really fun, even though it's obvious where I started to rush the drawings... :P

Also, this breaks all the rules of the hourly comics day.... but oh well.

1920s Bride.. Photoshop Practise

I'm currently trying to find my style through a different range of mediums, from Photoshop to watercolours to colour pencils.

So here are the work-in-progress images as well as the final one for a 1920s style Bride.

I may be working on some wedding invitations for a family friend soon, so want to try and find a way of colouring that suits me.

This piece was really fun to work on. I loved working on all the details; the lace, headband and bouquet in particular.

I made the brush too. I got the default hard round brush and adjusted the hardness and spacing to make the imperfect edge which is a favourite style I see in other illustrators artwork. I'll need to develop a few more though.

As I didn't plan the background, it's very simple, but I will definitely plan the backgrounds in the future. I definitely prefer a minimalist style to backgrounds, but definitely need to practise spacial backgrounds with depth, perspective and objects.

Green Wing...

I know, I know. I'm late to this by 8 years, but! I love it!

Have been doing a few sketches... (uploading on my tumblr) but here they are:

Amazing cast and just an amazing show! Bloody love it.

I used reference only for Guy at the bottom and a bit for Tamsin in the second one. None for Mac in the top one (which is why it looks nothing like him). I love drawing Tamsin Greig's face, she is just stunning!

I'll have to try drawing all the characters from the series though at some point!
